Barack Obama wants your kids to stay in school…all the time…

29 Sep

This is wrong on so many levels.

From the get go, let’s get the federal government out of education. It should be handled locally with minimal assistance from the state and no interference from Washington.

A couple of years back there was talk about Chesterfield schools going year round. So far it hasn’t happened. And if it did, we’d look for an alternative.

Maybe we should do a little less singing about Barack Obama and a little more teaching reading, writing and, ‘rithmatic…

You see, it’s not just about time, as the Associated Press reports:

Kids in the U.S. spend more hours in school (1,146 instructional hours per year) than do kids in the Asian countries that persistently outscore the U.S. on math and science tests — Singapore (903), Taiwan (1,050), Japan (1,005) and Hong Kong (1,013). That is despite the fact that Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong have longer school years (190 to 201 days) than does the U.S. (180 days).

So obviously, Obama’s equation of more equals better just doesn’t ring true. We’ve known for years that more money doesn’t equal better. More time won’t either.

But think of some of the practical implications:

The American tourism industry would be devastated. Hotels, resorts, amusement parks, campgrounds, parks, community pools.

The summer camp industry would be devastated.

Teachers and school administrators won’t be able to work a summer job, again impacting the tourism industry.

Child care costs would skyrocket and parents would have far fewer, and more costly options.

What of the cost of airconditioning schools that don’t need it during the shoulder seasons?

And are you really willing to put your child on an unairconditioned school bus in Arizona or Texas in the middle of July?

Think of the costs of fixing this and the cost to the environment of additional energy usage.

That’s just the beginning of the problems.

This is not the answer Mr. President. It’s not up to you to level the playing field.

Can you just stop messin’ with stuff and run the country?

But while Obama’s proposal is meant to improve education, critics say a curtailed summer vacation will have a dire economic impact on school systems, which could be forced to retrofit their schools for air conditioning, pay overtime to teachers and incur higher utility costs.
